Shanghai Swimming Centre

Cie.Asia recently won an international competition for the design of the new Shanghai Swimming stadium. The stadium is intended to host the diving events during the 2011 FINA World cup which will take place in Shanghai. This 33,000 sm facility (excluding parking) will accomodate 7000 spectators at maximum capacity, has 2 olympic size pools (one for competition, the other for training), 1 competition diving pool, training facilitites, and other ancillary spaces. Located on the Shanghai Stadium grounds in the XujiaHui district, the facility is located on a major infrastructural node, accessible by bus, next to a major elevated road, and located above a subway station. In addition, many sustainable design solutions were integrated into the design. Most notably, an extremely light weight roof structure and extensive use of PV cells on the building roof and facades to reduce embodied energy and energy consumption.
